The survey programme at Doraville is designed to capture seasonal differences in bird assemblages and activity across an extensive proposed development site and hinterland, following NatureScot and relevant RSPB, BTO, JNCC and NIEA guidance. Monthly flight activity watches from nine fixed point locations record target species’ flight paths, behaviour and flight height to inform collision risk analysis, while complementary surveys provide additional bird distribution and abundance data with respect to both breeding birds with specific focus on breeding raptors, breeding woodcock and red grouse, and wintering birds including potential for winter roosts. Survey effort is coordinated to ensure full coverage of the site and completion of surveys within the required survey windows while ensuring that baseline data is collected in suitable conditions. Ongoing analysis of data allows for adaptation of methods or survey effort if significant observations or patterns emerge to ensure a representative dataset is provided to the client. Seasonal updates are provided regularly to the client to advise on any identified ornithological constraints and a final bird survey report will detail the findings of the entire survey programme for use in the environmental assessment.
