Ecology
Specialist ecological expertise, enhanced by digital innovation and AI-enabled tools, for faster project delivery and better outcomes for biodiversity.
Our ecologists combine established field expertise with advanced survey technology, GIS and AI-enabled tools to collect, analyse and present ecological data. We support projects from site selection and feasibility through surveys, assessment, consenting, construction, operation and long-term habitat management. We work independently or as part of integrated project teams, bringing practical advice, innovative approaches and delivery capacity to complex energy, infrastructure and development projects.

ECOLOGY Key Services
Comprehensive ecology services for effective project outcomes.
Preliminary ecological appraisal and habitat surveys
Our preliminary ecological appraisals establish the ecological baseline of a site, identify constraints and opportunities, and determine the need for further assessment or species-specific surveys. We undertake terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine habitat surveys and mapping using the UK Habitat Classification, National Vegetation Classification and other recognised methods, as appropriate to the location and project. Our early-stage services also include desk studies, ecological constraints mapping, site screening, due diligence, options appraisal and ecological input to site selection and design.
Protected and notable species
We undertake surveys and assessments for protected and notable species, including bats, badger, great crested newt, hazel dormouse, otter, water vole, reptiles, amphibians, plants and invertebrates. Our ecologists provide species-specific advice throughout project design and construction, including mitigation strategies, method statements, monitoring and support with protected species license applications.
Biodiversity net gain and enhancement
We help clients understand their biodiversity requirements early and integrate practical, deliverable enhancements into project design. For projects in England, our services include baseline habitat and condition assessments, statutory biodiversity metric calculations, BNG optioneering and strategy, biodiversity gain plans, habitat management and monitoring plans and long-term monitoring. Across the UK, we tailor our biodiversity enhancement advice to the applicable national and local planning policy and project requirements.
Ecological Impact Assessment
We prepare robust and proportionate Ecological Impact Assessments (EIA) as stand-alone reports and as ecology and biodiversity chapters for environmental statements and EIA reports. We work with project teams to avoid impacts through site selection and design before developing practical measures to mitigate, compensate for and monitor residual effects.
Habitats Regulations Assessment
We prepare the ecological evidence and technical assessments required to inform Habitats Regulations Assessment (HRA) by the relevant competent authority. Our services include HRA screening reports, shadow HRAs, information to inform appropriate assessment, assessment of alternatives and technical support for derogation cases, including imperative reasons of overriding public interest, where required.
Ornithology
Our specialist ornithologists undertake comprehensive bird surveys, assessment and monitoring for development, infrastructure, energy and conservation projects. Our capabilities include breeding and wintering bird surveys, vantage point surveys, raptor surveys, wetland bird surveys, collision risk modelling, ornithological impact assessment and the development of mitigation and monitoring programmes. We provide ornithological input throughout the project lifecycle, from site selection and feasibility through impact assessment, construction and operational monitoring
Ecological mitigation, management and monitoring
We develop practical strategies and plans to protect, restore and enhance habitats and species throughout the project lifecycle. Our team prepares ecological mitigation strategies, construction environmental management plans, landscape and ecological management plans, habitat management and monitoring plans, species protection plans, biodiversity action plans and long-term monitoring programmes. During construction, our ECoW and EnvCoW teams oversee their implementation and monitor compliance.
Ecological and Environmental Clerk of Works Services
Our Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) and Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) services provide practical, on-site oversight of ecological and environmental commitments during construction. Our services include pre-construction surveys, review of designs and method statements, site inductions and toolbox talks, supervision of environmentally sensitive works, protected species and habitat protection, pollution prevention, water-quality sampling, sonde deployment and monitoring, compliance inspections, liaison with project teams and regulators, and compliance reporting.
Invasive non-native species
We provide comprehensive survey, mapping and management services for invasive non-native species. Combining field surveys with high-resolution drone surveys, GIS and AI-assisted plant identification allows us to identify species, accurately map infestations and monitor change, particularly across extensive or difficult-to-access sites. All findings are reviewed and validated by our specialist ecologists. Our services include management plans, biosecurity measures, treatment strategies, construction-stage controls, monitoring and supervision of treatment activities.
Freshwater and aquatic ecology
Our freshwater specialists undertake aquatic habitat appraisal, fish and aquatic invertebrate surveys, electrofishing, environmental DNA sampling and ecological monitoring. We provide specialist surveys and assessment for species including freshwater pearl mussel, salmonids, lamprey and white-clawed crayfish, supporting impact assessment, consenting, mitigation and habitat restoration.
Marine mammal observation
Our experienced marine mammal observers undertake shore-based surveys and monitoring during marine works. We provide practical advice to help projects manage potential effects on marine mammals and comply with applicable consent and mitigation requirements.
Drone surveys and digital ecology
Our drone specialists undertake high-resolution aerial and thermal surveys to support habitat mapping, ecological constraints analysis, wildlife surveys and environmental monitoring. By integrating drone data with field surveys and GIS, we provide accurate, repeatable spatial evidence that supports efficient and informed decision-making across the project lifecycle.
